What you can import into Tanzania

No age ban

There is no maximum age for imported used vehicles. Older Hilux, Discovery and Scania trucks are popular for this reason.

Other import taxes

Import duty, VAT and other charges are added by the Tanzania Revenue Authority when the vehicle is cleared. Your clearing agent can give you the total for a specific vehicle.

We export Scania and other heavy trucks to Dar es Salaam. Ask us to check the duty position for your truck before you buy.

Tanzania import duty calculator

TRA starts from the CIF value of the vehicle, checked against its own valuation system. It then adds import duty, excise duty by engine size (and by age for vehicles over 8 years), VAT (18%), the Railway Development Levy and a customs processing fee.

This is an estimate. TRA (Tanzania Revenue Authority) makes the final assessment when the vehicle is cleared. Clearing agent, port charges and inland transport are not included. On any vehicle in our stock, tap Get CNF price to see the shipped price and the duty together.

Tanzania FAQ

Does the age of the vehicle change the duty?

Yes. Under the Finance Act 2026 (from 1 July 2026), extra excise duty applies by age: 18% for vehicles over 8 and up to 10 years old, 35% over 10 and up to 20 years, and 40% over 20 years. Your clearing agent can give you the full figure for a specific vehicle, and we can help you compare options.

Is an older vehicle cheaper overall?

The vehicle is cheaper, but excise duty is higher for vehicles over 8 years old, and much higher over 10 years (35%). Compare the full landed cost, not just the price.

Can I import a Scania truck into Tanzania?

Yes. We export Scania trucks to Dar es Salaam. Ask us for the CNF price and check the duty with your clearing agent.

Do you ship to Zambia, Malawi or DR Congo?

We ship to the port of Dar es Salaam. Onward transport to inland countries is usually arranged by your clearing or transport agent. Each country has its own import rules, so tell us where the vehicle is going.
